The iconic Zippo lighter was invented by George G. Blaisdell in 1932 in Bradford, Pennsylvania. He came up with the idea after observing his friend struggle with a bulky and awkward Austrian pocket lighter. Blaisdell retained the design of the chimney, which kept the flame burning even in adverse conditions. Zippo lighters are designed to be windproof, which led to their immense popularity with the armed services, especially during World War II.
